Derived from the Latin word medicina, for “art of healing”, medicine includes a set of disciplines, methods and scientific knowledge to prevent, relieve or cure illnesses, infirmities and injuries. Focusing on human anatomy but also mental health, it is based on clinical examination, research, health care and biomedical technologies. The objective: to treat the patient through different forms of therapy, surgery or the prescription of drugs.


Hippocrates is described as the founding father of rational and modern medicine. It is in his name that doctors today take an oath to practice their profession. Since its first knowledge, medicine has evolved towards increasingly diversified practices. Biochemistry, rheumatology, neuroscience, dermatology or nutrition, it now includes several scientific branches.


What is contemporary medicine?



Medicine is a science, technique and art focused on the functioning and study of the human body, as well as the restoration and maintenance of health. Those who have made it their profession therefore have the role of advancing the knowledge accumulated so far, of caring for patients and helping them to prevent all kinds of diseases. Modern medicine is based on a scientific approach validating its effectiveness, while several centuries ago, healing, care and prevention through plants or available natural resources were favored. This aspect of medicine is said to be unconventional.

Complementary therapies, alternative medicine or alternative medicine, natural approaches have also won their acclaim, although they are not always unanimous. A number of them claim ancient practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicine or Ayurvedic medicine. They were followed by naturopathy, homeopathy or even osteopathy. They claim a holistic approach that aims to examine the patient as a whole. Their objective: to treat without resorting to chemical molecules.
